The World's First Voice-Activated Popcorn-Shooter: The Popinator!

2012_09_21-Popinator.jpgI know what you're probably thinking. Why would you need an automatic popcorn-launcher when you can toss popcorn into your mouth perfectly well on your own? And to that I say: Why wouldn't you want a machine that uses the voice-activated command "Pop!" to shoot a piece of popcorn directly into your mouth? Still don't believe me? See it in action below.

Say the word "pop" to the Popinator and it will locate you based on the sound of your voice, and shoot a piece of popcorn at your mouth. As far as we know, only one prototype of the Popinator exists, at the headquarters of the company Popcorn, Indiana, but the inventors' enthusiasm about the machine's potential whether as a fun game or as the next logical step in popcorn convenience has me wondering if we'll see the Popinator on shelves someday soon.

Wal-Mart Pulling Indiana Cantaloupes Due to Salmonella Outbreak Food Safety News

2012-8-20-canteloupe.jpgAn important food news alert: in response to the multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium linked to cantaloupes grown in southwestern Indiana, Wal Mart Inc. has instructed all its stores to pull any cantaloupes grown in Indiana from the shelves.

So far 31 people have been hospitalized, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and 20 states have been affected by the outbreak so far, including Alabama, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.

According to Food Safety News, public health officials are not yet ready to name the farm, but "customers should avoid cantaloupes grown in southwestern Indiana."

The California Cantaloupe Advisory Board was quick to release a statement that said cantaloupes grown in California have "never been associated with a foodborne illness outbreak," and that " it is very important that consumers understand the commitment to food safety the vast majority of cantaloupe producers have and that the current outbreak is the result of one individual operation that did not follow these well-established safety practices for packing cantaloupe."
