Kitchen Before & After: A Kitchen Keeps Its Footprint, But Gets An Updated Look Reader Kitchen Remodel

When you're remodeling a kitchen, how do you pick appliances? If you're Kitchn reader Piper, you take two raw chickens to your local appliance store, cook them in two different ovens, and the oven that presents the best cooked chicken wins! (First of all, we'd like to know what appliance store agreed to that!) But this was just one of the tasks Piper tackled while updating her Napa Valley kitchen. Read more about her project and see 'After' photos below:

Piper tells us more about the renovation in her own words:

We took our Napa Valley kitchen down to the studs, but kept the same footprint, and built our dream kitchen. In choosing appliances, we took two raw chickens to our local appliance store and cooked them in two different ovens. Based on that test, we selected our oven.

The project was finished in 2009, and we've been delighted with it ever since. The kitchen was out of date in both design and functionality, and did not have much storage space or a very open feel. Using the same footprint, we updated the look, feel, functionality and gained a lot of storage space. We accomplished this by going to the ceiling with the cabinets, grouping the large appliances on one wall, using clever storage ideas (e.g. an appliance cart in the middle of the island, open bakers rack storage in the pantry), utilizing all walls for drawers and cabinets, and using mirrors to increase visual depth.

We also incorporated ideas such as an electric drawer opener for the garbage drawer so that it opens hands-free when your hands are full of chicken parts, and various specialized drawer fittings.

Thanks so much for sharing, Piper!

Kitchen Before & After: A Bedroom Becomes a New Kitchen for $6,000 Reader Kitchen Remodel

11.28.before_1.jpgWhat do you do if you have an "awful" old kitchen with a low popcorn ceiling and no surface space? If you're Kitchn reader Faith, you knock out a wall between the bedroom and dining room and build a new kitchen! In this budget $6,000 kitchen renovation, the bedroom became the kitchen and the old kitchen became a sitting room. (We assume another room in the house became the new bedroom!) Read more about the project below:

Faith of the blog Gracefulfitness tells us:

We kept our stove, sink, and refrigerator from the old kitchen. The countertops and cabinets are all IKEA and the open shelves, windowbox seat, and front of the bar is White Oak from my husband's childhood farm in West Virginia.

We removed the drop ceiling, placed bead-board between the beams, and painted it all white. This was a bigger headache than expected! The existing beams weren't even so each strip of bead-board had to be custom cut and the whole thing took over 12 hours. We kept the old closet from the bedroom and turned it into the pantry, leaving the door off for easy access.

The floor ended up being a huge hassle! When it was a bedroom it was a little step down to a carpeted floor. It took a lot of plywood to raise the floor and then some sanding down of the old floor to match them up.

The hardest decision was about what countertop to use. I was always in favor of butcherblock because of price and look but had concerns about using it around the sink. It hasn't been an issue and I absolutely love the warm look and ease of care!

Thanks for sharing, Faith!

Kitchen Before & After: Kathryn's Sonoma Garden Kitchen Makeover Reader Kitchen Remodel

2012-10-15-before4.jpg

When Kitchn reader Kathryn and her husband found the weekend house of their dreams, it was perfect in almost every way. While it did have a huge garden (great for Kathryn's intense gardening obsession), the kitchen was small and outdated. Six months later the couple decided to fix that problem. Here's what they did:

2012-10-15-after2.jpg

In Kathryn's words:

My husband and I bought a weekend property with a large garden in Sonoma last fall so I could exercise my gardening obsession. The goal was to grow a lot of our own food. We had hoped to find a home with an expansive open plan kitchen but no luck. We did find a property that was perfect in every way (especially the garden) except it had an outdated, galley kitchen with a location that made it impossible to even hope for a large space. After living in it for six months, I couldn't wait any longer and we took the plunge to gut it. We saved on cabinets by using IKEA (we have a 12 year old IKEA kitchen in the city and it still looks great) so we could splurge on appliances and fittings. I finally have the stove of my dreams and love canning and cooking on it every chance I get. Since there isn't much room for storage (I wanted few upper cabinets to keep the tight space open) so we just renovated a nearby laundry room to accommodate all the canned veggies and fruits from the garden. The garden has 16 raised beds and 14 fruit trees, enough to keep me busy in the kitchen and garden every weekend!

How fun is that red stove? We love the new look.

Thanks, Kathryn!

Kitchen Before & After: Debra's Bibliothque Paris Kitchen Renovation Reader Kitchen Remodel

2012-9-10-ba.jpgWhen Kitchn reader Debra bought her apartment in the Marais district of Paris in 2007, the kitchen had not been renovated since the 1950's. Needless to say, it needed a lot work! But because it was small and opened into the living room, she also wanted it to feel integrated with the rest of the house, to have a bit of a bibliothque feel. Here's what she did:

Dark wood, a black backsplash, and dark grey/green floors help create a cozy feel that blends with the old-world feel of the apartment. Debra tells us a little more about the project:

As the apartment is small, it was a real challenge to make every space count. I therefore decided to make the kitchen open, knocking down all walls and having it intergrated with my living room. It then had to have a feeling of a bibliothque rather than a full-blown kitchen. The end result had to work with the living area and also be a real working kitchen.

I love spending time in the kitchen preparing great things that make people happy and full! It isn't so important how big your kitchen is but how organized, so that you can actually prepare and cook with as little stress as possible and have fun! An open kitchen like this one allows you to share the social aspect of cooking with your guests, thus my attraction to this type of set up. I have a similar one in my fisherman's cottage in Normandy so people can actually chip in and help or hang out by the fireplace and relax.

Thanks for sharing, Debra!
