Some regional sandwiches hit the big time, like the New Orleans muffuletta or the Los Angeles-born French dip, while others are famous only to those who grew up eating them. From Kentucky's Hot Brown to Chicago's Italian beef sandwich, there are enough regional specialties around the country to keep a traveling sandwich eater well-fed and happy. What is your favorite regional sandwich?

Lonely Planet has a list of 20 great regional sandwiches that is a good place to start for those interested in expanding their meat-and-cheese horizons. Some are a little terrifying (yet intriguing!), like the Horseshoe from Springfield, Illinois, an open-faced sandwich made with two pieces of toasted bread and two hamburger patties piled high with cheese-sauce-smothered French fries.

Others are well-known favorites, like the lobster roll, the po'boy and the Cuban, which fans argue was either invented in Tampa or Key West or was it Cuba? If it ever comes up, just nod and keep eating; we've found that when it comes to great regional sandwiches, emotions run deep.

If You Had to Eat Just One Sandwich for the Rest of Your Life... What Would It Be?

For me, it's very simple. While I enjoy a crunchy vegetable sandwich and a good juicy burger, from time to time, the sandwich that has my heart is the tomato-mozzarella hot panini, Italian-style. Hot and crusty, bread compressed into crispy toast, creamy mozzarella and tomato juice oozing out the sides. If I had to eat just one sandwich the rest of my life, that's what I would choose.

Of course, how depressing would it be to give up all the range of sandwiches, hoagies, and subs for just one variety! And yet, we each probably have a sandwich that could hold us, if we had to make a choice. A sandwich we cling to out of love and familiarity.

There are also the instances of pickiness or set routine. My brother ate nothing but peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a brief period in his toddler years, and my father subsisted on a daily Big Mac during law school. Do you have a sandwich like this? Your go-to meal?

What makes a sandwich a sandwich, philosophically-speaking? Is it just a filling between two pieces of plain bread? Or can it expand into adjacent territory -- burritos, wraps, baked pockets?

Boiled Egg, Seared Asparagus & Pickled Onion Sandwiches

Personally, I think a sandwich is a full meal you can hold in your hands -- nourishing, satisfying, and easily carried. So that would include baked goodies like saucy calzones, pita pockets, and more. This clearly opens up fresh vistas of possibility for lunchtime!
