Crazy Colors: Make Rainbow Colored Pasta!

110812-coloredpasta.jpg Sometimes the dinner table needs a little fun. It doesn't matter if you have kids or not, this trick for dying cooked pasta is simple, eye-catching and makes mouths happy.

Ali (from Gimmie Some Oven) had a simple idea: cook pasta, rinse to cool, toss it into zip top bags with food coloring inside, then rinse your pasta once more. The result? Colored noodle explosion! What a fun idea for kids, or just very playful adults! Check out the full tutorial below.

Table Setting Tip: Replace Cut Flower Arrangements with Potted Plants

103012-martha1.jpgCut flowers are perhaps the most common decoration for the dinner table. But cut flowers can be expensive and tall arrangements can even obstruct your guests' view of one another! This party table from Martha Stewart provides a great reminder that fresh-cut stems aren't always the only way to go!

This table from Martha's recent dinner party is decked out with tall candles and oversized hurricane chimneys (which ahem are rather more obstructive than a tall flower arrangement, but whatever!). Next to them sit small potted plants. These beautiful begonias are a great addition to the table and can live on in your house when the party is over.

Instead of spending $20+ per bouquet, try potting plants up instead. Just keep in mind where they'll go in your house when dinner is through, or even send them home with guests as party favors.

The Scented Dining Experience

2012_09_21-candle.jpgIt's commonly understood that we shouldn't use scented candles at the dinner table. Much of taste is about smell and a heavily scented candle can interfere with the flavors of a dish. But what about perfume and aftershave? Or scented candles elsewhere in the house, or simmering pots of cinnamon and cloves, or a sick of incense? Do you entertain scent-free?

I love the way scent contributes to atmosphere, the way it is part of a personal signature. For me, scent is very evocative and can imprint experiences. There's a certain kind of incense that an old friend used to burn and every time I smell it, I'm transported back to the days when we had more time to spend together.

But scent is controversial, especially in the dining room. There's a famous story about a temperamental chef who used to kick people out of his restaurant if their perfume was too strong. And plenty of chefs I know would love to do the same if they felt they could get away with it.

When I have people over for dinner, I want to engage all of their senses and usually the smell of dinner in the oven is enough. For a cocktail party where there's not too much cooking going on, though, a few scented candles might be OK. Although truth be told, once more than a few people show up with splashed-on perfumes and colognes, it can get to be too much.

I love a beautifully scented candle and I despise a poorly scented one. Cheap, fake, overly sweet scents are a big turnoff. (Think anything with the word 'pie' in its name.) But beauty is in the eye of the beholder which means that what's lovely to me could be terrible to someone else and vice versa. So in the end, I tend to stick with unscented candles for my entertaining and save the scented ones for an evening alone.

Dinner Party Dilemma: What To Do When You're Served Something Unpalatable?

Have you ever been a guest at someone's house for dinner and been served a meal that is a complete turnoff? This is of course a common scenario when traveling and encountering a new cuisine but it can just as easily happen at your boss' dinner table. Maybe it's way, way, way spicier than you can handle, or the meat is strange or unfamiliar, cooked a little to rare, or not cooked at all. Simply not liking a certain food is one thing, but having your stomach roll at the thought of eating a dish that was proudly put in front of you by your host is quite another. So, the question begs to be asked:

While some of us get a vicarious kick of watching this kind of thing on TV shows devoted to 'gross' food, it's a quite different matter when the food has been specially prepared for you. Politeness and the feelings of your host are very important, but do you really want to spend the next 24 hours camped out in the bathroom?

Obviously a true allergy or a religious/moral restriction are easy to navigate, but often that's not the case. Seasoned travelers are used to this and are adventuresome eaters because it clearly comes with the territory. But as mentioned previously, this can happen close to home and doesn't necessary mean gross (to you) or unfamiliar food. Often, it's the level of spiciness, the preparation, or some food combination that just doesn't work for you.

How do you handle such delicate situations?
