A 5-Dollar 5-Minute Cocktail Shaker

121012-cocktail.jpg I use canning jars for everything these days, so why not add one more can-do to the list: a cocktail shaker! Want to see how it works?

Our friends over at Simply Stated caught this great little tutorial over at Instructables. You just need two lids: one with which to shake, and one to punch holes in. It's a fine solution for small space dwellers who don't have much cabinet or counter space.

Not Just a Bottle of Booze: Make Them a Cocktail Kit

When I began stocking my home bar a couple years ago, I was on a tight budget, so I started by focusing on one cocktail at a time, buying just the components of that drink. If you have friends or relatives who are looking to expand their mixed drink horizons, use this strategy to give them a thoughtful gift they'll appreciate: make them a cocktail kit.

Instead of giving just a bottle of liquor, buy all the ingredients needed to make a specific cocktail and wrap them together, along with your favorite recipe for the drink. To dress up the gift, you can also include glassware specific to that drink, or a bar tool you know they don't have. I've been both the giver and recipient of these types of kits, and they are always appreciated.

Here are a few ideas for cocktail kits:

Old Fashioned: Rye or bourbon + Angustora bitters
Optional: Old fashioned glasses, homemade maraschino cherries

Moscow Mule: Vodka + premium ginger ale, such as Fever Tree or Q Tonic
Optional: Copper mugs

Gimlet: Gin + homemade raw lime cordial (must be kept refrigerated)
Optional: A cocktail shaker

Hot Buttered Rum: Rum + a jar of homemade hot buttered rum mix (must be kept refrigerated)
Optional: Mugs, a jar of pumpkin butter + recipe for hot pumpkin buttered rum

Hot Toddy: Bourbon + spices + local honey
Optional: Mugs, Meyer lemons

Do you have any ideas for cocktails that could be translated into kits?

No Shaking Required: A Better Way to Make Egg-White Foam for Cocktails

2012_09_05-EggFoam.jpgTrying to recreate a stellar Ramos Gin Fizz she had at a bar, Megan of Not Martha found that she wasn't able to get the deep layer of egg-white foam she was looking for by just shaking up the drink in her cocktail shaker. Instead, she experimented with repurposing a kitchen unitasker into an effective egg-white cocktail maker that turned out to be "so easy," she says, "it felt like cheating."

Megan used a whipped cream maker to create her Ramos Gin Fizz, a trick she heard modern bartenders use to make extra-foamy egg-white cocktails. She set up an experiment to see if using a one would result in a foamier drink than the usual cocktail shaker method, and as the photo above shows, the whipped cream maker method wins by a landslide, producing a drink topped with fluffy foam stiff enough to hold a straw straight up.

Shaking the drink in a cocktail shaker is also a real workout for your arm two of Megan's tries clocked in at over ten minutes so if egg-white cocktails are in your regular rotation, it might be worth investing in a whipped cream maker for almost effortless mixing and beautiful results.

Quick, Easy Summer Cocktail Recipe: The Vinho Verde & Gin Spin The 10-Minute Happy Hour

2012_08_15-IMG_6321.jpgMost people are aware that Port wine is from Portugal. But not all are familiar with the fact that northern Portugal, home to all those rich Ports, also produces a slew of spritzy light white wine in the Vinho Verde region, and even fewer know how good this wine tastes when mixed with gin and served cold.

2012_08_15-IMG_6405.jpgOften Vinho Verde tops wine lovers' lists for best sips of the summer. On a hot day, these light- bodied, crisp, acidic, spritzy whites are a perfect choice of drink. Many grapes are used throughout the sub-regions of Vinho Verde, but if you're just getting started, I recommend focusing on bottles labeled Alvarinho. Vinho Verdes made from 100% Alvarinho grapes are consistently great whites. Yes, this name sounds just like another fab white pouring from Spain, Albario, but these whites are all Portuguese.

2012_08_15-IMG_6309.jpgOn a recent visit to one of the smaller producers of the region, Soalheiro (www.soalheiro.com) I was charmed to find a brother/ sister team (he makes the wine, she makes the cured pork products totally love it!) who served up a vertical tasting that proved Vinho Verde from a stellar producer, though seemingly delicate on the surface, has the brawn to go the distance in the cellar too. Vintage after vintage these wines proved to be delicious, interesting and age-worthy. Since it had the moxie to stand up to time I thought why not give these whites a spin in the cocktail shaker and see how they hold up there.

Since this is the 10-Minute Happy Hour, I thought it a great tribute to the Soalheiro family duo to toast with a Vinho Verde cocktail, of course served side-by-side a plate of cured meats.

After a few experiments with spirits and Vinho Verde I found its perfect playmate. When this wine is mixed with gin, the combination of the slightly spritzy light white with an aromatic junipery gin makes a very refreshing cold cocktail sure to make your happy hour even happier.

Vinho Verde & Gin Spin Cocktail

3 ounces Vinho Verde
1 ounce gin
Green olives for garnish (which also go nicely with the cured pork)
or you can go with a lemon twist for garnish

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice add the wine and the gin. Stir until chilled through. Strain into a glass and garnish with olives.*

* If serving in a Martini glass, I recommend placing the olives in the glass first to avoid overflow if you add them after you've already filled your glass with the cocktail. You can however, serve them on the side, as my friend Deb always says they take up too much room in the glass which she feels is better reserved for the cocktail.
