Beer Review: Peach Porch Lounger from New Belgium Brewing Beer Sessions

2012-09-11-PeachAleNewBelgium-1.jpgWant to hang onto summer just a little longer? Pick up a bottle or two of this ale from New Belgium Brewing's Lips of Faith series and find yourself a spot on the porch. Its soft fruity flavors and candy-like malts are just the thing for living these last sunny days to their fullest.

Beer Details: Peach Porch Lounger (Lips of Faith Series) from New Belgium Brewing Company (part-farmhouse ale, part-sour ale, 9.4% ABV)

Appearance: Undisputedly peachy colored with a crackling head of foam that quickly dissipates.

Aroma: Fresh-cut fruit aromas with a smattering of warm spices and white pepper. The aromas seem to be more pineapple-y than peach-y, though.

Taste: Soft, so soft! Lots of sweet and candy-like fruit flavors upfront (peach, pineapple, apricot) with a pleasantly dry finish. Crackery malts appear mid-palate along with a touch of earthy hops. The overall effect is like eating a piece of fresh-baked bread slathered with fruit jam. It also doesn't taste nearly as alcoholic as it really is.

Super drinkable right now, if a bit sweet for my taste. I'm actually really curious to see how this one ages. The New Belgium brewers dosed this ale with Brettanomyces before bottling, the yeast responsible for the funky, tart, puckering flavors in Belgian sour ales. There's a faint whiff of this right now, but I imagine that even more of those flavors will develop in a few months and really help to balance the sweeter notes.

Food Pairings: You'll want a variety of snacks on hand while drinking this beer. Spiced corn nuts or roasted chickpeas would be great, along with a selection of dried fruits and sharp cheeses.
