The Best Cookbooks of 2012: What Were Your Favorite Finds This Year?

It's the time again, when we look back at the year and share our favorite finds. But first, we want to know: what do you think were the best cookbooks of 2012?

Renee Schettler Rossi from Leite's Culinaria offered an eclectic roundup of cookbook favorites, including Michael Ruhlman's Salumi (an authoritative guide for any "hardcore salumerist"), Jim Lahey's My Pizza ("you'll find nothing here but crisp crusts so thin as to seemingly defy every law of physics"), Melissa Hamilton and Christopher Hirsheimer's Canal House Cooks Every Day ("a book that can instantly transport you from your mundane reality...to a life in which lunch is lingered over each day") and Jesse Griffiths' Afield ("lots of straightforward, non-emasculating advice on everything from roasting a whole hog to making a venison burger").

We at The Kitchn will offer our own 2012 picks in the coming weeks, but we're curious: what cookbooks really inspired you this year?

Can You Recommend Diabetic-Friendly Cookbooks Aimed at Non-Diabetic Cooks? Good Questions

Q: My dad was recently diagnosed as pre-diabetic, and he needs to make some big changes in his eating habits. He is an amazing cook who makes dinner on a nightly basis, but those dinners are filled with carbs, which he needs to cut down on.

He is not really quick to embrace new health food trends and wants to avoid changing his cooking lifestyle completely. I also know for sure that he will not cook from a book that has the word "diabetic" in the title he's just too stubborn. Do you know of any good cookbooks or recipes for diabetics that are kind of disguised as regular cookbooks/recipes?

Tell Us! What's Your Favorite Latin America Cookbook?

Latin American cuisine is complex and varied, covering a vast region and, like all great cuisines, influenced by invasions, migrations, immigration and ancient traditions. It's impossible to pick just one cookbook to cover everything. Even so, there must be a few that you find yourself going to again and again. What are your favorite Latin American cookbooks?

Mexico! Cuba! Argentina! Brazil! El Savador! Chile! Latin America produces some of the world's most flavorful, vibrant and popular foods. There's so much to explore and experiment with in the Latin American culinary repertoire, so it's time for us to go beyond guacamole and chips and discover these wonderful cuisines. (Not that we should forgo guacamole and chips all together. That would be just too sad.)

These days it's possible to find Latin American cookbooks for vegetarians and vegans, as well as volumes dedicated to low-fat, low carb and diabetic cooking. And while we can thank people like Diana Kennedy and Rick Bayless for their contributions to bringing these flavors to non-Latin American tables, it's also nice to see people native to the many countries of Latin American penning their own cookbooks. Francis Mallman's Seven Fires: Grilling the Argentine Way would have to be one of my favorites.
