Unfortunately, grubby cat paws aren't the only side-effect of all the maintenance being done on our apartment. Constant opening of doors plus hot weather equals flies. There's not much we can do to completely prevent them from entering the building, but it would be nice to repel them from the kitchen
I prefer not to kill flies and other insects but, like anyone, I don't enjoy them buzzing around my food. So a tutorial over at wikiHow on getting ride of house flies with cloves piqued my interest. Apparently house flies hate the odor and placing whole cloves near doorways and windows can turn them off from coming inside.
WikiHow shows how to make a pomander with an apple and whole cloves, which has the added effect of looking pretty and seasonal. However, it's really just the cloves that are disagreeable to flies, so one could also make sachets or perhaps add a few drops of clove essential oil to homemade cleaning products. As a quick measure, I placed a dish of whole cloves near the entrance to the kitchen and so far, no flies.
