Beer Review: Old Chub Scotch Ale from Oskar Blues Brewery Beer Sessions

2012-10-30-OldChubOskarBlues-1.jpgIt comes in a can, but honey, you're going to want to pour this one into a glass. No way you want to miss the breathtaking sight of that pillowy cap of meringue-like foam or the spice cake aromas that come with it. Breathe in deeply, friends, and take a sip.

Beer Stats: Old Chub Scotch Ale from Oskar Blues Brewery, Longmont, Colorado (Scotch Ale, 8% ABV)

Appearance: Super sudsy with a soft tan head that leaves some nice lacing down the glass. The beer itself is nearly opaque. It's a deep deep brown with ruby glints against the light.

Aroma: Brown sugar, milk chocolate, boozy fruit, and soft melting caramels.

Taste: This beer is like being wrapped in a big cozy blanket near a crackling fire. It tastes like spice cake: dark brown sugar, cocoa, cinnamon and cloves, dried cherries and dates, a teaspoon of molasses. It's sweet and malty, to be sure, but not at all cloying. Rather, it tastes completely...lush. The barest hint of wood smoke at the end just completes the picture.

This is my pick for Beer of the Season, for sure. Big things come in small (canned) packages!

Food Pairings: This is a beer to linger over, so I'd pick it for dessert. It would go well with a big slice of chocolate cake or a few spicy ginger snaps.

Have you tried this beer? What do you think of it?
