Karen and Guy of Design Vidal renovate and redo old homes and then stage them for selling. A recent Apartment Therapy House Tour got in on the ground level to watch the process unfold, and learned a little bit about updating vintage kitchens in the process.
"Knowing where to save and where to spend is key to getting the most bang for your buck in a home remodel," the couple tells Apartment Therapy. The kitchen actually ended up being the most transformed out of the whole project, but it was also the most difficult to work with. They kept the kitchen where it was, but they tweaked a few things to make it workable for modern life:
Just as the kitchen ended up being the most transformed, it was also the most challenging space. Originally it was broken up into two rooms, sort of the "kitchen" and a little mud room. Oddly enough, there were so many doors coming into the kitchen that there almost wasn't any available wall space! We realized that we could take some of the space from the existing dining room, which was way too large, and use it to extend the footprint of the kitchen. We re-configured the walls and openings, and provided better access to the large backyard.
