Yamamoto Motoi's large, elaborate art installations take hundreds of hours to complete and are made with one common kitchen staple. Can you guess what it is?
...Salt! The concept was originally inspired by the death of Yamamoto's sister from complications due to brain cancer. In exploring his sister's condition, he created a three-dimensional model of a brain, which led him to the idea of flattening the patterns and channels of the brain into a two-dimensional design.
Yamamoto spends hours pouring salt into improvisational designs that are on view for several weeks. After that, he invites the public to help destroy the work, which is packed into bags and returned to the sea.
